Hon Abbas Tajudeen Delivers 5th NSUK Public Lecture Nasarawa state university keffi was agog with intellectuals who drew international and National attention as the speaker of the house of representatives deliver the 5th Nasarawa state university keffi public lecture on Monday 23rd June 2025.

 The event which held at the university main auditorium attracted scholars. students. politicians. traditional rulers and stakeholders.

 The purpose of the lecture is to x-ray why lawmakers should concentrate on quality legislation for the betterment of the people and Nigeria.

 The well articulated and packaged lecture booklet with the theme:LEGISLATING under pressure. The realities of political representation in Nigeria

The lecture provided an insight into the various nature of political representation in the country today and the numerous challenges that follows.

 Hon Tajudeen in his lecture outlined the constitutionally mandated roles of the legislature. Which includes lawmaking.representation.oversight functions and the approval of National Budgets.

 He maintained that lawmakers should shoulder moreresponsibilities especially in their variousconstituencies.

 ‘Overtime as local government structures have grown weaker and less responsive.Nigerians have turned to their federal lawmakers not just for National policy but for immediate local solution.’

 The speaker pointed out that lawmakers are now seen as the go to figures for school fees.medical bills. Employment letters.electricity bills. Transformers.boreholes.road repairs. Lawmakers are compelled to execute the functions of the local government and state.federal government agencies.

 “Under my leadership.the 10th Assembly has pursued a more balanced approach. Rather than reverting to subservience or open defiance. We emphasized dialogue.consensus and inclusive leadership he stated. “

 The speaker stressed that the house remained committed to amending or rejecting proposals that did not serve the public interest while also promoting policy coherence in an era of high public expectations and economic uncertainty.

In a statement signed by the special adviser to the speaker on media and publicity.musa krishi quoted Abbas as saying ” this approach has helped preserve legislative autonomy while ensuring smoother budget processes.

 The Rt.Hon Tajudeen Abbas opined that the house of representatives remained committed to the amendment and rejection of proposals that did not serve the public interest. While also promoting policy coherence in an era of high public expectations and economic uncertainty.

 He said the 10th Assembly are more confident and forward looking legislation that values both collaboration and independence through structured engagement. Performance monitoring.and inclusive dialogue. The National Assembly is redefining its role as a partner in governance and a credible watchdog over the public purse.
