Catholic Bishop Raises Alarm Over High Inflation Rate
The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ilorin, Most Reverend Anselm Lawani, has expressed deep concerns about the soaring inflation rate in Nigeria, attributing it largely to the removal of the petroleum subsidy. He emphasized that the government’s palliative measures have not effectively addressed the issue.
During a Democracy Day event themed “The Church and State Collaboration for Harmonious Living and for the Common Good,” held in Ilorin, Lawani urged the government to take more decisive actions to ease the suffering of Nigerians.
“The incessant increases in the pump price of petrol, following the removal of the petroleum subsidy last year, have had a ripple effect on other sectors. Prices of goods and services, including agricultural products, have skyrocketed.
“The situation is dire and painful. Despite the government’s efforts at various levels to implement recovery initiatives, the palliative measures have not significantly softened the blow of the subsidy removal.
“Many Nigerians are struggling and voicing their distress due to high inflation and the escalating cost of living. A large proportion of our population lives below the poverty line, despite our country’s rich human and natural resources. Many are trapped in poverty, unable to afford three meals a day,” Lawani lamented.
He also called on the Kwara State government to consider the human impact of ongoing road expansion projects in Ilorin, the state capital, which have disrupted local businesses.
“Many people have been displaced from their livelihoods. How will these individuals and their families survive? Such projects should be executed with compassion by providing alternative options for those affected,” he added.
However, Lawani also praised the Kwara State government for its infrastructure efforts, acknowledging their positive impact.
“Infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and potable water are crucial for rapid socioeconomic development. The current administration’s efforts in these areas deserve commendation.
“However, the distribution of infrastructural projects is uneven. We urge the Kwara State government to ensure equitable distribution of social amenities across all parts of the state. For instance, good roads in rural areas will facilitate the movement of farm produce to urban centres,” he noted.
Lawani emphasized the importance of effective resource management and good governance for improving citizens’ wellbeing. He highlighted the significance of the Democracy Day press conference in fostering collaboration between the government and citizens for a better Nigeria, especially as the country marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
“The government has the responsibility to protect life and property. As responsible citizens, we should pay our taxes and abide by the law. While Nigeria has made progress, significant challenges remain in areas such as security, healthcare, education, and food provision.
“Political leaders must not relent; they must address these challenges head-on. The Church is ready to work with the State to promote initiatives that enhance understanding, unity, and cooperation among people of different religious and ethnic backgrounds. This collaboration aims at achieving harmonious living and rapid socioeconomic development for the common good of all,” he concluded. [6/21, 11:18 AM] +234 816
